Starting an internship is always exciting, yet sometimes nerve-wracking. As I embark on my first industry role, my journey has been filled with challenges and personal growth. My path to POTENZA began at the career fair hosted by my university, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. After going through the POTENZA website, I was drawn to the innovative solutions they were creating, and I knew this would be the ideal place to start my professional journey. I had a chat with the POTENZA team that day, hoping to be called in for an interview eventually.
Weeks later, when I received the call for an interview, I was thrilled, and a little nervous, of course. I prepared thoroughly, knowing this could be the opportunity I had been waiting for. As it was my very first professional interview in my career, throughout that process I understood what would be expected of me as a Business Analyst and offered a glimpse into the culture and values at POTENZA.
When I received the internship offer, I felt a whirlwind of emotions. It was an incredible opportunity from an established industry leader, giving me the chance to apply my university knowledge and take my first steps toward building a career in business analysis. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize that POTENZA expected more than just technical expertise; they valued critical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication. This revelation opened my eyes to the gap between academic learning and the professional skills needed to thrive in the industry. It became clear that I had to refine and develop these essential capabilities to succeed in my career journey.
Discovering New Knowledge: My Introduction to Intelligent Automation
When I first joined POTENZA as a BA intern, I quickly realized that the role was far different and deep from anything I had learned in my academic journey. Although I had studied business analysis concepts in an academic format at KDU, I had never expected to plant myself in Intelligent Automation. Mainly due to this fact, as someone who had no prior knowledge of IA, the moment I stepped into the IA team, I felt I had entered a sector of business analysis that was dynamic, futuristic, and full of potential.
My team was welcoming and patient, making sure I understood the core concepts. They encouraged me to ask questions and learn by doing. I began by observing how the team integrated IA into business processes, through various technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA), machine learning, and artificial intelligence to streamline operations.
Despite my initial unfamiliarity with the technical aspects of Intelligent Automation (IA), I quickly understood its practical applications for addressing real-world business challenges. Through team meetings and brainstorming sessions, I gained insights into how IA is used to automate repetitive tasks, enhance decision-making, and boost overall efficiency. I was genuinely amazed by the potential of these technologies to minimize human error and increase productivity, enabling businesses to concentrate on more strategic initiatives.
Bridging Business Needs and Technology: My Role in the IA Team
As a IA team player, I had an opportunity to identify business problems and pain points, through gathering requirements to recommend effective automation solutions. As I mentioned before, thanks to my highly collaborative team, I gained a deeper understanding of the intersection between real-world business needs and technology. Working closely with technical team members, I learned how to address these pain points in ways that create win-win outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
To succeed in this exercise what I understand was the importance of clear communication in this role. I had to translate business requirements into actionable tasks for the technical team while ensuring that stakeholders understood the benefits and outcomes of IA solutions. I learned to focus not only on gathering data but also on understanding the underlying business goals and how IA could align with them.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far is that business analysis in IA goes beyond just identifying business requirements. It’s really about understanding how technology can be leveraged to meet business needs and boost efficiency. Working with the IA team, I saw firsthand how important it is to have a strong grasp of both the business processes and the technologies being used. This realization has made me even more excited about the future of IA and its potential to transform entire industries.
A Friendly and Collaborative Environment
I was fortunate to be part of an environment that truly valued learning and curiosity. POTENZA’s culture made it easy to ask questions without fear of judgment, which allowed me to absorb knowledge quickly. I had the chance to attend various meetings, contribute to discussions, and apply what I learned to real-world projects. This exposure to both the technical and business aspects of the work has helped me develop a well-rounded skill set.
Growing and Evolving: A Journey of Personal Development
Throughout my internship, I’ve learned that personal growth is about more than just acquiring technical skills—it’s also about building confidence, improving communication, and becoming more adaptable. In my role, I’m continuously learning how to gather requirements, understand business processes, and identify opportunities for improvement.
One of the key skills I’m focusing on is breaking down complex processes and presenting them in a clear, simple way. Although I’m still developing this ability, I’ve realized that effective business analysis is not just about proposing solutions; it’s about bridging the gap between technical details and business needs. As I gain more experience, I find this aspect of the role increasingly rewarding.
A Promising Journey: My Evolving Career in Business Analysis
As I reflect on my internship experience, I can see how far I’ve come since I first started. From not knowing much about the role of a business analyst to gaining hands-on experience and learning about different industrial methodologies, I’ve developed a strong foundation that I’ll continue to build upon throughout my career. I now feel much more confident in my ability to contribute to business analysis projects and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
My time at POTENZA has given me a glimpse into the future of business analysis, and I am eager to continue exploring the field. The challenges, the support, and the hands-on experience have helped me grow both personally and professionally. I look forward to the rest of my internship and beyond, knowing that I am building a solid foundation for my career.
